3. Establishment of the CJD Surveillance Unit
Terms of reference

3.5 The main objectives of the CJDSU study were:

1. to identify any change in the epidemiological characteristics of CJD; and
2. to assess the extent to which any such changes were linked to the occurrence of BSE. ¹

3.6 The CJDSU was expected to document and publish any changes in the clinical or other characteristics of CJD, or in the epidemiology of CJD, and conduct investigations into the cause of these changes.
