3. Statistics
BSE statistics outside the UK

3.20 The following statistics show how BSE has spread outside the UK. They are based on figures published by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE). 1 The earliest confirmed cases (originating in the country itself, rather than imported) were in 1989 and 1990 in the Republic of Ireland and Switzerland. The total number of cases worldwide by the end of 1996 was 311 (excluding the Republic of Ireland and imported cases), with the majority in Switzerland.

3.21 In the first eight months or so of 2000, 85 cases were reported in Portugal, 43 in France, 57 in the Republic of Ireland, 25 in Switzerland, and 4 in Belgium. Denmark also reported a case.

3.22 The following countries have reported cases only in imported animals: Canada (1 case in 1993); Falkland Islands (1 case in 1989); Germany (6 cases - 1 in 1992, 3 in 1994 and 2 in 1997); Italy (2 cases in 1994); and Oman (2 cases confirmed in 1989).

3.23 Meanwhile, by September 2000, 437 cases had been reported (though not necessarily confirmed) in the Isle of Man, 146 in Jersey, and 685 in Guernsey.
