Epizootic

Of a disease, temporarily prevalent and widespread in an animal population

FSH

Follicular Stimulating Hormone

GAFTA

Grain and Feed Trade Association

Gonadotrophin

Hormone, secreted by the pituitary gland, which controls the activities of the testes and ovaries

Great Britain

Official name of the island of Great Britain, which comprises England, Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but not of Great Britain

Hydrolyse

To break down (a compound) by chemical reactionwith water

MAFF

Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food

MBM

Meat and bone meal

MLC

Meat and Livestock Commission

NFU

National Farmers' Union

Oestrus

The period in which a cow is receptive to a male

OPs

Organophosphates

OTMS

Over Thirty Months Scheme

Pituitary

The most important ductless, or endocrine, gland inthe body

Progesterone

A sex hormone which prepares the reproductive tract for pregnancy. It inhibits oestrus, and thus is used in breeding to manipulate the timing of oestrus activity

Prostaglandins

A group of hormone-like compounds which cause contraction of the uterus. They are used in veterinary practice for control of oestrus, or to induce abortionor parturition

Rinderpest

An infectious viral disease of cattle characterised by fever and dysentery

SBO

Specified Bovine Offal

Scouring

Diarrhoea in livestock

SEAC

Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee

Serology

Diagnostic examination of blood serum

Superovulation

The production of extra (mammal's) eggs, which can be induced by means of hormones

SVS

State Veterinary Service

Systemic

Of or relating to a system as a whole

UKASTA
