Volume 12: Livestock Farming
10. Organic farming
Introduction

10.1 It has been suggested to the Inquiry that organic farms did not suffer from BSE, or at least not to the same extent as conventional farms. The Soil Association believes it is still true that 'there has never been a recorded case of BSE in an animal that was born in an organic herd where full organic management was in place throughout the animal's life'. 1 This chapter looks at how organic farming differs from conventional farming, particularly in terms of livestock feeding and medication regimes.
